Car Hire Deposit & Credit Card Guide
Confused about how car hire deposits work in Spain? This guide explains how much is blocked, which cards are accepted, when money is released, and how to rent if you only have a debit card — all in simple English.
What Is a Deposit in Car Hire?
When you rent a car, the company temporarily "blocks" an amount on your card. This isn't a payment — it's a security hold to cover possible damage, fuel or fines. You can't use that money until it's released.
The amount depends on the car class and insurance coverage. Economy cars may require €300–€500, while SUVs or luxury models can reach €1,500 or more.
Typical Deposit Amounts
| Car group | Deposit (hold) |
|---|---|
| Mini / Economy | €300–€500 |
| Compact / Family | €600–€900 |
| SUV / Premium | €1,000–€1,500 |
These are general ranges for Spain. Each provider may differ slightly.
When Is It Released?
After returning the car in good condition, the hold is lifted. The release can take 3–10 working days, depending on your bank. Some cards show it instantly, others keep it "pending" until cleared.
If you paid fines or damage charges, the company may deduct from the deposit before releasing the rest.
Credit vs Debit Cards
Most Spanish car hire desks require a credit card in the driver's name. The reason: a deposit block doesn't "charge" the account, which only credit cards can properly handle.
If you only have a debit card, some companies allow it — but only if you buy their full insurance package so that no deposit is needed. Expect a higher daily rate but no blocked funds.
- Credit card (Visa / Mastercard): accepted almost everywhere
- Debit card: accepted only by some companies with full insurance
- American Express: accepted for payment, sometimes not for deposit
- Virtual / prepaid cards: rarely accepted
Tips to Avoid Deposit Stress
- Use a credit card with enough available limit before travelling.
- Check if your card PIN works abroad (for chip verification).
- Keep a separate card for car hire so daily funds aren't frozen.
- Ask the agent to show the blocked amount on the terminal before you sign.
- If possible, return during desk hours to speed up refund release.
Most issues come from using debit or prepaid cards with limited balance — plan ahead and it's smooth.
Blocked vs Charged
A blocked amount means money is "frozen" but not taken. It disappears automatically after a few days. A charged amount means the company actually took it — this only happens for optional extras or damage.
Refund Delays
Each bank has its own timing. Some process releases in 24h, others need up to 10 working days. If the amount doesn't return after two weeks, contact both the rental company and your bank with the authorization code from your receipt.
FAQ
How can I reduce or avoid the deposit?
Buying the rental company's full coverage (zero excess) usually removes or reduces the deposit entirely. External policies don't change the hold.
Is Amex accepted?
Some major desks accept American Express for payments but not for the deposit block. Always confirm before booking.
What about virtual cards?
Virtual and mobile cards (Apple Pay, Revolut, etc.) rarely work for deposits. Always bring a physical card with the driver's name printed on it.
