Step-by-Step: From Landing to Driving
Collect Your Luggage
After landing at Málaga Airport, follow signs to baggage reclaim. Most flights arrive at Terminal 3 (T3), which is the main international terminal.
Tip: If you're traveling light with just carry-on, you can skip straight to the rental center and save time.
Walk to the Car Rental Center
Look for signs saying "Car Rental" (Alquiler de Coches). From Terminal 3, it's about a 5-minute walk. You'll exit the terminal and see the rental center building on your left.
Easy to find: Just follow the blue signs with a car icon. There's a covered walkway so you won't get wet if it's raining.
The building is called "Centro de Alquiler de Vehículos" — all rental companies are inside.
Find Your Rental Company Desk
Inside the rental center, you'll see desks for all major companies: Hertz, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Sixt, Enterprise, and many local companies.
What you'll need:
- • Your booking confirmation (email or voucher)
- • Driver's licence (valid for at least 1 year)
- • Credit card in the driver's name (for deposit)
- • Passport or ID card
Queue times: Usually 10-20 minutes. Longer during peak season (July-August) and on Friday/Saturday afternoons.
Complete the Paperwork
The staff will check your documents and explain the rental terms. They may offer extra insurance or upgrades — it's up to you if you want them.
Things to confirm:
- • Fuel policy (usually Full-to-Full)
- • Where to return the car
- • Toll road charges (if using AP-7)
- • Insurance coverage included
- • Mileage limit (usually unlimited)
Collect Your Car
You'll be given a key (or key card) and told where your car is parked. The parking area is right outside the rental center — your car number will be clearly marked.
Before you drive away — IMPORTANT:
- • Walk around the car and check for scratches or damage
- • Take photos on your phone (all four sides + inside)
- • Check the fuel level matches the rental agreement
- • Make sure you have the rental company's phone number
- • Adjust mirrors and seat before leaving the lot
This protects you from being charged for existing damage when you return the car.
Drive to Marbella!
Exit the rental parking area and follow signs for "Cádiz" or "Costa del Sol Oeste". You have two route options:
A-7 (Free Road)
- • 45-50 minutes to Marbella
- • Coastal views in places
- • Goes through towns (traffic lights)
- • More scenic route
AP-7 (Toll Road)
- • 35-40 minutes to Marbella
- • Costs around €8-10
- • Faster, smoother drive
- • Less traffic
Local tip: Most visitors use the A-7 on the way to Marbella (to save money and see the coast) and take the AP-7 toll road on the way back to catch their flight (faster and less stressful).

Common Questions
How long does the whole process take?
From landing to driving away: typically 45-60 minutes (including baggage collection and paperwork). Add extra time during busy periods.
Can I pick up outside opening hours?
Most major companies have 24/7 desks at the airport. Smaller local companies may have limited hours — check when booking.
What if my flight is delayed?
Don't worry. Rental companies monitor flight arrivals. Your car will still be available. If delayed significantly, it's good practice to call them.
Do I need to print my booking confirmation?
Not necessarily. Most companies accept digital confirmations on your phone. But having a printed copy is a good backup in case of technical issues.
