Quick facts
AP-7 is toll and often calmer; A-7 is free but busier near towns.
Border essentials
- ✅ Bring passports for everyone.
- ✅ Have rental contract & insurance handy.
- ✅ Expect queues at peak hours.
Parking strategy
Fast & simple: park in La Línea and walk across the frontier. If you drive in, use a central car park in Gibraltar.
The Drive — Simple Coastal Route
From Marbella, follow the A-7 west towards Algeciras. For a quieter ride, take the AP-7 toll road for part of the trip. Exit for La Línea de la Concepción (the Spanish town next to Gibraltar) and follow signs to the frontier.
Traffic can build near the border. Allow a little buffer time, especially in summer and late afternoons.
Border, Documents & Rental-Car Rules
- ✅ Passport required. Non-EU/UK travellers should check visa rules in advance.
- ✅ Rental cars: Not all contracts allow driving into Gibraltar. Some require prior approval or extra insurance.
- ✅ If your rental doesn't cover Gibraltar, simply park in La Línea and walk across on foot — easy and popular.
- ✅ Duty-free allowances apply when returning to Spain. Don't exceed limits for alcohol/tobacco.
Rules can change. Always follow what's written in your rental agreement and the current border guidance.
Where to Park
Option 1 — Park in La Línea (Spain) & Walk In
The easiest option. Choose a car park close to the frontier, cross on foot, and you're in Gibraltar in minutes. You'll then walk or take a local bus/taxi to the cable car or Main Street.
Walking avoids potential delays for cars at the frontier and the airport runway crossing.
Option 2 — Drive into Gibraltar
Allowed only if your rental contract & insurance cover it. Once inside, use central car parks such as Midtown, ICC, or Ocean Village, and explore on foot.
Expect occasional waits for the runway crossing (Winston Churchill Ave) when planes land or take off.
What to See & Do
- ✅ The Rock of Gibraltar — take the cable car up for epic views.
- ✅ Barbary macaques — the famous monkeys (don't feed or touch).
- ✅ St. Michael's Cave — dramatic limestone caverns with lights and music.
- ✅ Main Street — British-style shops, pubs and duty-free stores.
- ✅ Europa Point — lighthouse views across to Morocco on clear days.
