Yes — that's the fun part. A car gives you freedom to stop for viewpoints, cafés and photos along the way. Public transport exists but is much slower and limits your flexibility.
Is AP-7 worth paying for?
Often yes on busy days. It's calmer and can be faster. A-7 is free and more scenic through towns. For trips to Málaga or Gibraltar, the toll is usually €3-6 and saves 10-20 minutes.

Which trip is best for first-time visitors?
Málaga is perfect for beginners — it's the closest (50-70 min), easy to navigate, with clear parking and lots to see. The drive is straightforward on the highway.
Can I do two destinations in one day?
Not recommended. Each destination deserves a full day. Rushing between cities means less time enjoying them and more time driving. The only exception might be a quick stop in Tarifa before taking the ferry to Tangier.
What should I bring on a day trip?
Water, snacks, sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and a phone charger. For Gibraltar and Tangier, bring your passport. In winter for Sierra Nevada, pack warm clothes and carry snow chains in the car.
Are these trips suitable for families with kids?
Yes! Málaga has beaches and the Picasso Museum. Gibraltar has monkeys and a cable car. Tarifa has huge sandy beaches. Ronda might be better for older kids who can appreciate the views. Pack snacks and plan bathroom stops.
When is the best time to leave?
Leave early (8:00-9:00 AM) to beat traffic and heat in summer. You'll arrive with the whole day ahead. For Seville in summer, consider arriving mid-morning when it's cooler, then explore until evening.
Do I need to book anything in advance?
For most trips, no — just drive and explore. For Tangier, book your ferry ticket. For Sierra Nevada in peak season, book ski rentals ahead. For Seville's Alcázar, booking online saves queuing time.
Is petrol expensive in Spain?
Expect around €1.50-1.70 per liter. A round trip to Málaga costs about €10-15 in fuel. To Seville, around €35-45. Most rental cars are fuel-efficient diesels or hybrids.
Can I use my phone for navigation?
Yes — Google Maps and Waze work perfectly in Spain. Download offline maps before you leave if you're worried about data. Most modern rental cars have USB charging ports.
What if I don't speak Spanish?
No problem! Tourist areas in Málaga, Seville, Gibraltar, and Ronda have plenty of English speakers. Restaurants usually have English menus. Basic phrases like "hola," "gracias," and "la cuenta" (the bill) help a lot.
Are the mountain roads difficult to drive?
The A-397 to Ronda has curves but is well-maintained and scenic. Drive carefully and take your time. If you're nervous about mountain driving, stick to Málaga or Gibraltar on flat highways.
Can I take my rental car to Gibraltar?
Only if your rental agreement specifically allows it and you have cross-border insurance. Most people park in La Línea (Spain) and walk across the border — it's easier and cheaper.
Do I need my passport for Gibraltar?
Yes — Gibraltar is British territory outside the Schengen Area. EU citizens need an ID card or passport. Non-EU visitors need a valid passport.
